On 2 Nov 1953, Samaritans answered our first call ☎️
70 years on, we're more needed than ever. Last year, there wasn't a single second when our volunteers weren't on the phone.
No matter how much time passes, the core of what we do stays the same: We're always here to listen 💚
Today is #WorldMentalHealthDay 🌍 And it’s time for action.
Take that first step to getting help. Or share this post and help us reach someone who really needs to see it 💙
We are shocked and desperately saddened to learn that the famous Sycamore Gap tree at Hadrian's Wall has been felled overnight, in what appears to be an act of vandalism.
We know just how much this iconic tree is loved locally, nationally and by everyone who has visited.
We are working with our partners to understand what has happened and what can be done.
The incident has also been reported to the police.
The Mental Health Act is 40 years old this week and we desperately need the UK government to update it.
But we can’t do it without you.
Today is our day of action. We need you to sign this petition and share it with everyone you know 👇

The Mental Health Act is outdated.
The UK government needs to reform it.
Sign our petition. This is urgent - it needs to happen before the next general election.

This Friday @MimHanley and @KerenMacLennan are hosting a public event for nearly 100 people from the locality to come into the University and hear about evidence-based initiatives to support autistic people to thrive in County Durham. 1/
We're deeply saddened at the death of our alumnus & leading broadcaster George Alagiah. George studied politics here, as part of @vanmildert1965, and returned to receive an honorary degree in 2007. Our thoughts are with his loved ones

My nephew and girlfriend were injured in this crash. If you are from the area and have any dash cam or cctv footage can you take a look?

Big own goal by @Nike!
Many @Lionesses fans love Mary Earps & want her kit. She's a role model to women & girls in 🏴.
Brands should inspire young women to play ⚽️, let them replicate their idols' identity & encourage them to excel.
Would this happen in the men's game?
Remember the @BBCPanorama footage of the Edenfield mental health unit?
It's why we started calling for an investigation into failings of mental health hospitals 📢 1/5
It’s time the UK government #RaiseTheStandard of mental health hospitals 👊🏾
”Prison like”, “Cold”, “Frightening”.
It shouldn’t be this way. Join us 👉🏾 https://t.co/Y9ghARROnh

Agreed - virtual meetings make being a councillor it easier to combine with FT work/ other responsibilities. Some meetings (eg. full council) should be in person, but many don't need to be. I'd find it impossible to be a councillor if all meetings were in-person!
I welcome the announcement that compensation payments to the victims of the Post Office Horizon scandal will be exempt from inheritance tax.
Legislation for this welcome change should be brought forward quickly to give victims reassurance and confidence to come forward.
