Tanzania will never become a digital economy until digital becomes cheaper chan cash, by cheaper I mean completely free.

Open a bank account? Monthly maintenance fee.
Use the banking app? They cut.
Send money? They cut again.
Deposit 100k and somehow 30% disappears into random charges. Why would anyone use a bank like that?

I moved to Korea 13 years ago. The government decided banks already make enough money from lending out our deposits so all digital transactions became 100% free. Within 6 months everyone switched to digital. I haven’t touched cash in years I forgot what it looks like.

CRDB makes far more from lending than from these fees. They could charge zero and still be highly profitable, all while lending out the money we give them.

There’s so much work to do. I’m going to open a bank in TZ next year. Easy, cheap, safe payments drive everything. Sipendi kusikia hela imekwama hewani subiri wiki nzima. WTF!!
