Since Sep 4th when Vladimir Kara Murza was sent to Siberia he’s been held for 43 straight days in a punishment cell. They’ve now sent him to solitary confinement for another 3 months! Because of his deteriorating health from 2 poisoning attempts, he will die if he’s not freed
🧵 Nobody in the think-tank community gets it right all the time. I’ve been wrong and I try being the first to admit when I am. That’s how you learn. But one year ago, just before the invasion, Samuel Charap and Scott Boston of Rand got it WRONG.
And I mean W.R.O.N.G. 👇🏻
A late contribution to #MedalMonday…
I ran my first marathon in Sunday’s @LondonMarathon in memory of my son Ralph.
Thanks to @LullabyTrust, all those who lined the course for their support and encouragement, and everybody who has donated to the cause.

In a few days I’ll be running the @LondonMarathon raising money for @LullabyTrust in memory of my son Ralph, who died in November 2020 aged 6 weeks.
If you’re able to, please consider donating to help this brilliant charity.

It’s a property that used to feature in @clamp_k’s “Kleptocracy Tours”.I seem to recall that @OliverBullough had it on the first tour, but then it was handed down to me as Oliver moved to Brompton Road tube station.Or have I misremembered? @r_borisovich@artied@lukeharding1968
I called for oligarchs’ yachts to be seized in 2014,when Russia first invaded Ukraine. It led to a double-page spread in The Sun.I was dismissed as being alarmist, along with others (inc @RhonddaBryant and @edwardlucas) who warned of Putin’s aggressive tendencies.Funny old world.
@Isakjee @AlPinkerton@ConGeostrategy Hi Arshad. Since I left Bham I’ve spent more time at Oxford Uni than I have anywhere else. Any partic reason why you focus on the part of my career at HJS, esp as this paper was written after I left (in fact when I was back at Oxford)? Thanks.
… as warmongers, neocons, new Cold Warriors etc in Western capitals (but never those in the Baltics or Central / Eastern Europe). Now is not the time to pick apart why this was; there’ll be years, perhaps decades, to do so. For the moment, Slava Ukraini! 2/2
It brings me no pleasure saying this, but I was right when I warned consistently about the threat Putin poses. So too were others, many more prominent than I am (eg, @Billbrowder, @edwardlucas, @anneapplebaum, @lukeharding1968). Yet for at least a decade we were dismissed… 1/2
My latest for the @spectator's @SpecCoffeeHouse, with @ConGeostrategy's @james_rogers:
"Is a full-scale war between Russia and Ukraine likely? You can forgive Kiev for worrying so — Vladimir Putin is already getting his excuses ready."

TONIGHT: Is Russia preparing to invade Ukraine?
Joe Biden has called for a summit with Vladimir Putin over the tension on Ukraine's eastern border, as Russia builds up military in the area https://t.co/FPBbBmuMJm
@AleemMaqbool reports at 2245 on @BBCTwo#Newsnight
Finally, I am grateful to Sir Andrew Wood, former UK Ambassador to Russia and Associate Fellow at @CHRussiaEurasia, for his generous Foreword to the report, as well as @MatBoulegue, @ALanoszka and others who provided feedback on drafts.
I have a new paper out today with @ConGeostrategy.
Entitled "How Russia ‘positions’ the United Kingdom", the paper it available at:
https://t.co/Ah08WxgdRO
It makes six key arguments:
6. In responding to Russia’s attempts to position the UK, Britain needs statespersons who will defend and promote the national interest using frank but professional language -- including about the nature of the Russian ‘threat’ and the nature of Russia’s current regime.
