Anyone that has spent time catching and tagging sharks will know there’s always apprehension until the shark is secured. We rarely lose sharks, however it can happen. Sometimes a shark pops a hook or crimp, and occasionally they bite through the fishing line and get off. Given this, the team always remain incredibly focused and somewhat anxious until they have the shark secured ready for tagging.
This video shows the moment we all dread, the line goes limp with no movement and the slack line is reeled in as someone shouts ‘it got off’.
As you can imagine, our hearts sunk, especially given we had a WHITE SHARK on the line… However, as you continue to watch the video you see the shark was in fact still on!! It seems the shark flipped and went into tonic immobility, then started to swim down and then back up towards the boat, and our team!
This unbelievable moment is one we regularly relive. White sharks are known for their intelligence and incredible cognitive abilities and well, this potential avoidance to capture is something we have never seen or heard of before! Did she really swim down and then up to gain slack? But why? To confuse us? To bite the slack line? Was she simply problem solving in an attempt to escape? We did go on to catch and tag her, meet Dolores. She was and is the first and only white shark to be satellite tagged off the coast of Jupiter, Florida.
In order to conserve and manage sharks, researchers use tags to track them in their natural habitat and study their movement patterns and behavior. This tagging allows researchers to better understand the species’ life history, social behavior, reproduction and much more, including how often the animals may interact with fisheries. These fields are all very important for advancing the conservation and management of sharks.

💥 PHASE TWO 💥 A huge thank you to all who supported phase one, the team worked incredibly hard and we’re excited to launch phase two 🇧🇸 Be sure to follow @sharkresearchst for regular updates!
▪️SECOND MISSION – Building removal! All 10 front dwelling buildings will need to be removed carefully and safely, with any salvageable materials kept for reuse/up-cycling. Saving the Blue’s beloved boat captain Marvin (also a mechanic and contractor) will lead this phase with the assistance of four other local and skilled Bahamians including Rontaa. We expect this phase to be completed sometime between November and December. This work, like the bush clearing, will be physically demanding, and we hope you will continue to support us on this journey by donating to this phase.

🇧🇸🦈 IT’S HERE 🦈🇧🇸

We can finally reveal @savingtheblue recently purchased a five acre piece of land on Andros!!

The property is heavily overgrown and holds thirteen derelict or collapsed buildings. The project of clearing the land and creating the first and only shark research station (@sharkresearchst) on Andros Island has begun, and we need your help!

FIRST MISSION - First up we plan to remove invasive trees and plants, cut back much of the dense bush and remove the endless heaps of dumped trash to create a safe, workable space. This project will be led by our cherished team member and Bahamian local, Sorantaa. Rantaa will lead a team of four Bahamians as they plough through the masses of overgrown bush to provide a safe workspace for all that follow. This work will be tiring and difficult in the Bahamian heat, not to mention the mosquitos!

DONATE – Please visit our GoFundMe (https://t.co/OtpPvjXVTd...) or our new website https://t.co/O6wQkVsXTg to support us and the local economy as we work to reach our important first goal.
We wouldn’t be here without your support and we’re excited to continue this journey together. THANK YOU!

It’s International Sawfish Day!
Smalltooth sawfish are among the world’s most threatened marine fishes. They are currently listed as critically endangered on the IUCN Red list due to loss of habitat as well as fishing mortality, mainly as by-catch. Andros has been found to have a viable population of sawfish which we hope to study in order to better understand and ultimately, help the recovery of this incredible species!

- It is important to point out that despite the title of this show, including the word ‘death’, there have been no recorded fatalities due to shark bites/attacks in Florida since 2010, and in fact, no fatalities in New Smyrna Beach… ever.
