President CEO @JapanSociety | Obsessive Father | Recovering Scholar-Practitioner | Selfie Taker | American Born + Japanese Upbringing = Global Bridge-Builder
Humbled and also slightly embarrassed to be profiled in this way by @nippon_en, but always trying to spread the importance of US-Japan and @japansociety's mission. https://t.co/rWHJPNIo6P
Honored to be in Honolulu keynoting the Hawaii–Japan Sister Cities Summit 🇺🇸🇯🇵 Already enjoyed meeting another “Dr. Joshua” — an MD who also knows how to navigate Trump world & Vatican 😅 just like Japan Society btw those buildings where Japan Society sits. Special week ahead!
今日は午前中の怒涛の打ち合わせ、昼からは本会議、夕方は東京都主催のSusHi Tech Tokyo 2026」(スシテック)で旧知のJoshua Walker ジャパンソサエティ理事長とトークセッションに登壇🍣

Honored (and more than a little surprised) my “Straight Talk” interview is the most-read on @JBpress today 🇯🇵

In Japanese, but Google Translate works well (with some nuance lost).

Sumo. Sakura. DC. 🇺🇸🌸🇯🇵
Nothing like #SakuraMatsuri bringing together family & friends from DC, NYC, Richmond—even Tokyo—under the blossoms.
From anime to sumo, this is #JapanInDC at its best.
Grateful to @jas_wdc and all who made it happen 🙏
It’s here. 📦
Opened the box… and it hit me— my book Japan, Beyond the Genkan is real.

This @MLB ad in Japan nails it.
From early morning TVs to everyday life, it captures a nation following its players abroad—not just stars like Ohtani, but the full ecosystem. A powerful reminder: America’s pastime isn’t just American anymore—it’s global. Hats off 👏
At a pivotal moment for U.S.–Japan relations, I joined @NHKWORLD_News’s @DelIraniTV to reflect on our mission at @JapanSociety
From Anime to Zen, Pikachu to Shogun—Japan shapes how Americans think, create & connect.
Time to go #BeyondTheGenkan 🇯🇵🇺🇸

From DC’s cold snap delaying cherry blossoms to the Takaichi–Trump summit, a pivotal week for U.S.–Japan. The alliance feels steady—but tested—where U.S. hard power meets Japan’s soft power.
My latest reflections in my newsletter 👇
https://t.co/hIzBkbaRHK
My quick take for tonight: PM Takaichi struck the right balance—appealing to Donald Trump (Barron’s birthday, 250th, cherry blossoms, IndyCars) while projecting a strong Japan. Son + tech leaders signaled a “golden age” of U.S.–Japan. This is a new era indeed w/ lots of PDA 🇯🇵🇺🇸
When asked why the U.S. didn’t tell allies about attacking Iran prior to the strikes, President Trump says, “we wanted surprise.”
“Who knows better about surprise better than Japan. Why didn’t you tell me about Pearl Harbor?” Trump says, alongside Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, who is meeting with the president at the White House on Thursday.
Optics: all smiles, laughs, and warm words at the Trump–Takaichi presser.
But beneath the tatemae facade, there’s real tension. Trump opens with praise—even jokes about learning Japanese—then pivots to a stark reminder about “surprise attacks” and power.
The subtext matters🇯🇵🇺🇸
.@myhlee captures the mood shift in DC & Tokyo.
What was meant to be a feel-good visit is now high-stakes: Iran war escalating, Trump’s China trip postponed, and PM Takaichi arrives as the first G7 leader to engage.
The tone has changed—but the alliance matters more than ever.
Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi is heading to Washington for her second summit with President Trump.
It was supposed to be a triumphant celebration of the alliance. Now, the war in Iran looms large and Takaichi is walking a tight rope.
