“If you haven't read hundreds of books, you are functionally illiterate, and you will be incompetent, because your personal experiences alone aren't broad enough to sustain you.”
— James N. Mattis

• Announced by Puerto Rico Governor Jenniffer González Colón
• Puerto Rico will equip emergency management offices with Starlink satellite internet.
• Starlink will donate satellite antennas to Puerto Rico’s emergency management bureau
• The deployment will cover all 78 municipalities
• Designed to keep communications online during hurricanes, disasters, and emergencies

This is why Starlink matters: internet when everything else goes down.
History forgets fast.
The creators of the MRI got rejected by the NIH for a grant. Then their paper got rejected by Nature. The company they worked for thought it was a waste of time to even draft the patent documents.
Took 15 years from there to become clinically useful.

Rigorous evaluation of medical AI is good for everyone, and we welcome it. Counter to a half-dozen independent studies from institutions such as the Mayo Clinic that were highly positive on OpenEvidence—a lone paper now purports to show that generalized AI beats specialized clinical AI (@UpToDate, @EvidenceOpen). The paper has a massive undisclosed conflict of interest and irredeemable methodological flaws.
Behind the scenes: The study authors run a competing in-house medical AI at their hospital, and asked OpenEvidence for an API to power it — including rights to build a "competing product" with OpenEvidence's own API. OpenEvidence declined. Then, this paper coincidentally appeared.
Point-by-point, looking closely at the datasets used in the study, the disingenuous and fatal flaws become immediately apparent 🧵.

Dr. Jay Bhattacharya: Our hearts go out to the passengers aboard the cruise ship M/V Hondius and their families during this difficult time. Our CDC team began coordinating with domestic and international partners as soon as we were notified of a hantavirus situation.
We understand that people are concerned and looking for information and that is why we provided clear, written health guidance to the American passengers through the State Department. The safety and health of the affected American travelers is our number one goal.
Hantavirus is not spread by people without symptoms, transmission requires close contact, and the risk to the American public is very low. CDC has the world’s leading experts on hantavirus and is lending its technical expertise when coordinating with interagency partners, state health offices, and international authorities on response and repatriation planning. We will be monitoring the health status and preparing medical support for all of the American passengers on the cruise.
CDC will continue to update as more information becomes available and remains committed to protecting the health and safety of the American public.
Brian Chesky shares why the saddest day of his life happened the day after Airbnb went public at $100B:
"We go public, we have a hundred billion dollar valuation. It's one of the best days of my life. The next day, I go on a Zoom meeting, and it was like it never happened."
"It became like the saddest day of my life. Because I realized, I got all this adulation, and I don't feel any different."
"Adulation is like a cup with a hole at the bottom. You keep filling it in, thinking it's love, except it just keeps coming out the bottom."
"That made me reevaluate what I'm doing this for. I want to do things for pure intrinsic reasons. Do the work like you used to do, like when you were a kid. It was light. Just make stuff. Make it for yourself."
"So many entrepreneurs focus on what they want to be. "I want to be a giant tech founder. I want to run a billion-dollar company." Instead of focusing on, "What do I want to make."
There's no way to fail if you're making what you love."

Jose Ortiz just won the Kentucky Derby, with his brother Irad earning second place. “What makes the Ortizes so good has something to do with horsemanship, an ineffable equine intuitiveness that not all jockeys possess, and which is the key to getting the animals to relax,” John Seabrook wrote in a 2017 profile of the brothers.
