Grateful for the opportunity to sit down with IAFC TV to discuss the evolving challenges facing our fire service and the urgent need to modernize how we prepare, support, and protect our responders.
From climate-driven wildfires to behavioral health and workforce development, these are conversations we must keep having—and acting on.
Thank you to the IAFC community for your leadership and partnership.
Not all communities have the same access to prevention tools.
Some homes still lack working smoke alarms. Some neighborhoods are built with outdated codes. Some families never receive emergency alerts in a language they understand.
This is where community risk reduction becomes a matter of justice.
Education, enforcement, and engineering need to work together, and they must be shaped by the realities of the communities we are trying to protect.
Prevention works, but only if we make it accessible and inclusive.

.@DrLoriUSFA was honored at the Women in Fire conference in San Diego with a lifetime achievement award for her work in fire service research, data, & leadership at @USFire. @WomeninFireOrg is an organization dedicated to championing female leaders in fire & emergency services.
Firefighters experience trauma that most people will never see in their lifetime, yet many still feel pressure to stay silent about it.
We’re working to change that. Peer support networks, access to counseling, and honest conversations are helping shift the culture of the fire service. But we still have a long way to go.
Mental health is firefighter health. And prioritizing it is not a luxury, it’s an operational necessity.
Our wildland firefighters are on the frontlines of a growing crisis. With longer fire seasons, hotter temperatures, and more frequent extreme weather events, our response systems are being pushed beyond their limits.
This is no longer about “fire season”—this is year-round readiness. We must invest in training, modern equipment, interagency coordination, and mental health support for those carrying the heaviest burdens.
As climate impacts escalate, our commitment to protecting both communities and the responders who serve them must grow with it.

Structure fire fatalities are still disproportionately affecting older adults. We must design safer living environments and educate caregivers.
