Board-certified ER doc & medical educator. Health news and misinformation, explained from the ER floor.
🎙The JAFERD Cast | Views mine, not medical advice
After a lengthy hiatus, I'm back on this platform. Proud to introduce The JAFERD Cast! A medical-focused podcast with the goal of lighting a candle in the dark.
Don't expect much though. At the end of the day, I'm just another frickin ER doctor.

Never got a chance to see it in theaters due to some family health issues, but can honestly say, Project Hail Mary is my favorite movie in years. An antidote to...*gestures all around*...this.

Sitting and taking tests for mandatory CME on my day off, on a weekend, while my family goes to the pool, involving Physician Burnout will never not be ironic. #wellness
While RFK Jr. and his cohort have been whittling away at trust in vaccines, they seem to be very silent on doing things to actually keep Americans healthy. Why bother with clean drinking water when it's easier to make misleading, hyperbolic comments on vaccines and fluoride?
A reminder that Hantavirus is caused by a virus and not a parasite, and therefore Ivermectin is useless against it just like it is useless for Covid-19, Influenza, cancer, Measles, etc.
Anyone who tells you otherwise is lying to you and probably wants to sell you something.
The US is not ready for another Pandemic. Hantavirus won't be it, but that doesn't mean we can continue to abide policies that only make us less safe in the long run.
"We did not ask for this room, or this music. But because we are here, let us dance".
Beautiful poem written by Stephen King for the TV adaptation of '11.22.63'. Highly recommend the limited series now on Netflix, and now need to read the book.
“We did not ask for this room, or this music; we were invited in. Therefore, because the dark surrounds us, let us turn our faces toward the light. Let us endure hardship to be grateful for plenty. We have been given pain to be astounded by joy."
This is driven in no small part to regional insurance monopolies, hospital consolidation, and private equity buyout of independant Physician practices. So let's make some effort to change all that. Thanks!
-signed a tired ER doc who saw >30 patients in 9 hours last night.
Good morning! A reminder that improving access to outpatient healthcare services decreases overall healthcare spending because it means less people will resort to seeking care in the Emergency Department, also prolonging wait times.
Someone could go to school for 4 years and study aerospace engineering, then get a PhD with a dissertation related to orbital mechanics, and some instagram influencer who watched a youtube video will be like "actually that guy is wrong" on a topic related to space travel and people will believe them.
I'm not sure how we got here, but I hope we go back to a society where credibility is earned with rigorous training in the associated field, not by a popularity contest.
Colon cancer is hitting adults under 50 at an alarming rate. If you’ve been putting off your screening, let this be your sign. 🛡️
