Kean University was proud to host the 'YOUth: Designing Safety' forum, bringing together middle and high school students from across the state to reimagine what safety looks like in their communities. Organized by the John S. Watson Institute for Urban Policy and Research in partnership with NOBLE NJ, the New Jersey Urban Mayors Association and The Positive Community, the forum featured creative activities and interactive discussions on policing, trust, violence prevention, social media and community resilience.
On the morning after one of the most divisive national elections in American history and recent events have stirred up strong emotions, it’s easy to feel uncertain about national policy. But one thing remains clear: what we do right here in our own local communities matters most. We hold the power to shape the future we want for our families, friends, and neighbors.
Localism is about focusing on what we can control: showing respect and care for each other, working together to improve our shared spaces, and supporting our local businesses. Regardless of how you feel about the results of this election, let’s keep our heads up and focus on what matters most—the work we do to help each other feel safe, valued, and empowered, right here in our own community.
No matter what happens at the national level, together we can all make a meaningful difference at home.
