Marine biologist and fish ecologist, studying impacts of global environmental change on fish, fisheries and marine ecosystems, still optimistic about the future
After a valuable social media holiday, I have made the move to Bluesky, where there is quality academic conversation without unsolicited political and antisocial vitriol:

🌊 Professor Steve Simpson, marine biologist, warns: overfishing threatens UK seas, communities & our climate 🐟 Add your voice - tell the PM to end overfishing!

Great to welcome 200+ Y1 undergrads to @BristolUni Biological Sciences. On retreat this week they forged new friendships over 22 activities, incl. pond dipping, woodland surveys, bat walks, and a mega #LifesABeach / #MarineConservationSociety beachclean, removing 57kg of litter!
Honoured to speak at the First Environmental Scientific Conference @SuezCanalUniv, where @BristolUni is collaborating on a range of coral reef conservation programmes. Delighted to share the stage with Prof Hanafi, who had the same supervisor (Prof. Andy Brand) as me @LivUni!
Protect the ocean, so it can protect us 🌊 Almost 200,000 of you used your voices to stand up for the oceans and ask for an end to bottom trawling within marine protected areas . I had the joy of ensuring your voices were heard, delivering this petition box to @DefraGovUK 🌊💙🪸
This is truly wonderful! Exemplary World Leader, Passionate Ocean Advocate and the Inspirational Next Generation combine to give us glimpse of a better future! #HopeSpringsEternal
It’s not every day you get to film with a penguin and a president! Moments like this, where I can share the magic of our oceans and connect with future ocean stewards, are what make this work so meaningful.

No nonsense passion and poetry from @ChrisGPackham. We don’t need new science, technology or laws, just for government, regulators and water companies to do their legal duty and keep our rivers and seas clean of sewage and pollution.
Chris Packham speaking at #MarchForCleanWater 🌊
"It's time to stop crying over spilt sewage, it's time to take action" @ChrisGPackham
"We know what we need and we know what we want. We wanted a reform of the regulators, an immediate review and replacement of Ofwat, and we want it now"
"We want a complete stop put on any industry knowingly and wantonly polluting our waters for profit"
"We want the polluters to pay and we want that now"
"We don't want new laws, we've got all the legislation we need. What we want is for this new Labour government to uphold and enforce those laws, and we want it now"
"We want every polluting industry to start investing for the long term. Upgrading infrastructure, reducing water wastage and leakage. Increasing efficient water use everywhere. And guess what, we want it now"
"Listen. We might be minnows, but together, today, we are mighty. And our message is as clear as the chalk streams of yesterday. We want want our water back, we want it back cleaner, and better"
Wise words from the ever eloquent @lizbonnin at the #MarchForCleanWater. One of many inspiring speeches from three generations of water lovers from all walks of life.
Hoping Kier Starmer PM, MPs from all parties, the Water Companies & @Ofwat are all listening.
Time to clean up
Liz Bonnin speaking at #MarchForCleanWater 🌊
"We know the undeniable truth. And we're all here today to say that the game is up" @lizbonnin
"Intensive industries, corporate greed and political systems, are destroying the planets life support systems that we rely on to thrive"
"And blatantly disregarding our human rights for societal well being"
"The UK is supposed the sixth most powerful country in the world.. But we have human sewage and toxic run off polluting 100% of our waterways"
"Is this really what success looks like?"
"We are not consumers to be used to prop up 1% of the population. We are humans who feel who love who dream who think"
"We are all deeply connected to each other and all of us deserve a healthy natural world so that all of life can thrive"
"True success, true progress, and the health of the planet are not mutually exclusive"
"It is entirely possible to have a thriving natural world, a thriving society and a thriving economy"
Epic turnout for the #MarchforCleanWater. Stunning costumes, great drumming, but more BLUE on the streets than in our everBROWN waterways. Let’s reverse that now!
Fix @Ofwat
Enforce the Law
Save our Rivers and Oceans
@MarchforWater
This Government must make the polluters pay , and of course if they fail in that endeavour , next time we’ll be back in a wave of brown , not blue 💩
@MarchforWater | #MarchForCleanWater
