Hoodoo and the Bible is a topic I see come up so often, and it is time to set the record straight. Hoodoo is an African Traditional Religion. It is not a sect of Christianity.

As Black folks, our ancestors used Christianity as a cloak to keep our practices alive. They understood the necessity of survival, but they also recognized the power in taking what was meant to oppress us and turning it into a tool of liberation. The Bible became one of those tools, a way to transmute our oppressors’ language into something that served us.

That being said, Hoodoo does not revolve around Christianity or the Bible. It is not dependent on either. The Bible is simply one tool in the toolbox. Some choose to work with it because it resonates with them and their spirits. Others do not, and that is okay. Just like some people feel more connected to working with water or fire, each practitioner finds what works best for them.

When the Bible is used in Hoodoo, it is not about trying to be more Christian. It is about reclaiming power. It is about calling on your spirits, your ancestors, and your guides, not the Christian God. There is power in taking something designed to control us and using it as a key to our own spiritual freedom. That is the essence of Hoodoo, turning what was meant to harm us into something that helps us thrive.
