UAAP LENIENT TO ATENEO, BUT STRICT TO OTHER UNIVERSITIES?
Veteran sports broadcaster Quinito Henson questioned the UAAP's decision to let Ateneo de Manila University handle its own investigation into the drowning deaths of student-athletes Rene Clert Baterbonia and Divine Adili, noting that neither the university nor members of its coaching staff have been sanctioned or suspended in connection with the incident.
Henson pointed to previous cases in which the UAAP imposed penalties, including Adamson University's use of ineligible player Marlou Aquino and the controversy surrounding former coach Aldin Ayo's training camp, which led to complaints from players. He argued that the league's response in the Ateneo case appears inconsistent with its actions in past incidents.

I now fully support Ateneo’s suspension for at least a year in all programs of the UAAP. Our student-athletes deserve better and Ateneo cannot be trusted to prioritize their best interests.
La Salle was suspended bec of negligence. It was DLSU that reported to the UAAP Board of fake ched certification of their 2 players. Despite the admission, the UAAP board still imposed 1 year suspension of DLSU in all sports bec Basketball was a flagship sport. As a result also,
Every few years, Ateneo produces a think piece about inequality in the Philippines. About the gap between the elite and the masa. About how institutions must serve the marginalized.
Rene Baterbonia was from Agusan del Sur. He was recruited because he was 6'4", won the Palaro MVP, and could help Ateneo win a UAAP title. He was the masa. He was the kind of kid those think pieces are supposedly written for.
He is now dead after drowning during an Ateneo-organized activity.
And the institution's response has been to ask for "privacy and space."
The gap between what Ateneo preaches and what Ateneo practices has never been more visible. Or more damning.
Sa mga defenders ng Ateneo, sino ang may kasalanan bakit naglipana ang fake news at mga conspiracy theories ngayon sa nangyari?
Hindi ba Ateneo rin? You built a training system on mystery and secrecy to elicit controversy at mapag-usapan. Ngayong may nangyari, sparse ang details
Ateneo de Manila is the school of presidents, senators, oligarchs, and Cabinet secretaries. It is the finishing school of Philippine power.
Two poor boys died under their watch. One from Agusan del Sur. One from Nigeria.
Not exactly the Ateneo demographic, are they?
They were recruited for their height and their game. They were useful to the institution.
And when they died during a school-organized activity, the institution responded with four boilerplate paragraphs and a request for "privacy."
Ironic how Ateneo calls for accountability when the name “Duterte” is involved, but can’t even acknowledge its own negligence when two athletes died under its watch.
Let's talk about what Ateneo is comfortable being loud about.
They were vocal against Duterte's drug war. Their faculty and administration signed statements, held forums, gave interviews.
They positioned themselves as the moral conscience of the nation.
Now two of their own student-athletes are dead and Rene Baterbonia's mother flown to Manila from Agusan del Sur asking why nobody told her what kind of training her 19-year-old son was being put through.
Where is that same moral energy now? Where are the press conferences? Where is the institutional accountability they so readily demand from everyone else?
Moral outrage, apparently, is a luxury reserved for politics. Not for the boys they recruited from the provinces to win championships.
admu’s statement on rene baterbonia’s death was deeply insensitive. wdym his mother, his family, had not been properly informed before the university made a public statement?! the family deserved to hear it first & be given time to process the loss. prestigious univ pero ganito?!
@violarexdev MY GOD I’M SO FUCKING MAD ABOUT THIS. Because what do you mean yung governor pa ng Agsur yung nagfacilitate ng flights to reunite Rene with his mom WHAT THE FUCK IS THAT ATENEO?!? Bakit hindi prio na ilipad sa Maynila yung nanay niya NAPAKAHAYOP NYONG LAHAT MGA WALANG PUSO
UAAP should indefinitely suspend AdMU from participating in sporting events. There must be a probe on what happened. There are clear lapses on the part of the coaching staff and management. Rumors circulating that "Team Building" like this were almost military like in nature.
LOOK: Rovelyn, the mother of Ateneo Men’s Basketball Team player Rene Baterbonia, expressed deep grief over the death of her son following what was described as a team “training” activity. (1/2) @gmanews
You know what’s insensitive?
Former Ateneo players being defensive of the institution when people are clamoring for accountability; when the families of the victims are saying they are being kept in the dark. That’s what is insensitive. Nobody asked their piece.
