🇮🇳 Indian Physicist Wins Major International Honour In Theoretical Physics

Prof Deepak Dhar has been awarded the 2026 Dirac Medal, one of the most prestigious honours in theoretical physics, by the International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP).

Dhar was recognised for pioneering work in statistical mechanics, particularly his exact solution of the Abelian sandpile model - showing how simple interactions in a complex system can produce sudden, unpredictable events. The idea has applications ranging from earthquakes and traffic jams to financial markets.

The 2026 medal is shared by four physicists for contributions extending statistical mechanics into areas including non-equilibrium physics, optimisation, theoretical neuroscience and AI.
