Sometimes when you go back to the beginning, you find something important that was lost.
I felt that as I re-read my 2007 column introducing Australians to a new service called Twitter. I interviewed Twitter co-founder Biz Stone, who was gracious and kind, despite likely feeling a little overwhelmed. Published in a national syndicate that included the Sydney Morning Herald, Brisbane Times, and Melbourne Age among others, it was written when Twitter had just 200k users. Today there are over 350 million.
There’s an earnest simplicity in it. My trying to transfer a temporal digital experience onto the printed page. @biz’s founder’s enthusiasm for the ageless human need to connect with others. My search to find some BIG meaning behind it all. All in a time before trolls, hate-mongering, disinformation, and monster-egos.
It was freelance work that paid well, and I needed it then. Fish and chips for the kids. I’d finish my assignments and walk barefoot across the street to the beach to surf for an hour or so, all my small worries washed away. On the way home I’d buy a paper and flip to my latest piece. I’d try to read every word as if I were a million strangers seeing it for the first time.
It was a simple and joyful time of waves and pages and ideas like streams that might one day be oceans.
