After the 2013 NBA season ended, Gregg Popovich realized he had a problem:
His team collapsed, losing game 6 and 7 of the NBA Finals after being seconds away from winning the championship. He wasn’t sure how to respond.
Popovich’s next few actions would define his next season and career with the Spurs:
"Pop's response was, 'Family!'" Brett Brown says. "'Everybody to the restaurant. Straight there.'
His instinct was to bring everyone together and go to dinner. He was famous for his family-style dinners with wine and he wasn’t changing that because of 2 crushing losses. They needed it now more than ever.
"In terms of just trying to just hook everybody up to life support and resuscitate everybody, it was the most amazing display of leadership," former Spurs assistant coach Chad Forcier said.
Dinner helped bring everyone together, but they were still heartbroken.
"I've thought about that play every day, without exception, four, five, six, 10 times a day," Popovich said. "I always will."
"I've never seen our team so broken," Point Guard Tony Parker said.
To kickoff training next year, they did training isolated in the mountains. They started with some military training, and then watched the Game 6 collapse. He played the game and they watched together. It was a defining moment to help them accept the loss. These moments helped them mourn and bond together, it gave them purpose for 2014.
"Our experience," Tim Duncan explained, "is one of our most valuable assets."
The 2014 Spurs were a thing of beauty with teamwork, passion, and excellence on full display. They went on to beat the Miami Heat in the 2014 NBA Finals after losing to them the previous season.
The iconic 2014 Spurs season was simply a result of the crushing 2013 season.
Takeaway 1:
The success in 2014 was a result of the “failure” in 2013.
Success is often forced out of adversity and challenges.
The iconic automobile maker Henry Ford failed with two different automobile companies before making the Ford Motor Company. You can either take failure as final or you can view it as an opportunity.
Takeaway 2:
Nothing is greater than a shared, collective purpose. The team knew their goal, their purpose and their WHY which made every practice, game and movement that much more powerful.
Simon Sinek always talks about the power of knowing WHY you do what you do.
He always says, “People don’t buy what you do; they buy why you do it. And what you do simply proves what you believe.”
The power of connected action with meaning.

This could’ve been your moment @GovAbbott to show support for teachers and fully fund our schools. You could’ve brought all Texans together on this issue but instead you’re demeaning a great profession that is much needed. As a teacher I want to know WHY do you hate us?
“Cool doesn’t win.
You've got to be willing to do the uncomfortable things that go into winning.
We are not going to win until we are humble enough to do the things that it takes to win games.
Winners know intangibles win games: preparation, execution, toughness."
Improvement isn't about talent, it's about effort.
Your level of talent may be out of your control, but your level of effort is a choice.
Don't make excuses - make choices.
If you really dedicate yourself, and you are consistent to the process, you can make special things happen.
But you have to have grit, and you can't buy that. You can develop it, obviously, but that's a skill all unto itself. " - Eric Spoelstra

@SportsCenter That is soooo horrible. This is NOT how our young female players should act, NOT a leader show some class like Clark who just walked away from her antics!!
"Attitude, effort, & hustle. Those are the three things that you can control at all times."
Success isn't just about talent, it's about daily choices.
Talent lets you to do things that others can't.
Attitude, effort, & hustle allow you to do things that others won't.

To excel as a player, one must prioritize skill development, but true collective success only comes when those skills are used to benefit the team.
Balancing individual goals with team objectives is the key to winning together.
