In Iran, two prisoners (Yousef Mehrad and Seyed Sadrullah Fazli Zare) have been transferred to solitary confinement for the execution of their death sentence on charges of "insulting the Prophet".
Yousef Mehrad, a father of three young children and a resident of Ardabil, was arrested in his home by security forces in the early morning of June 24, 2020. He was sentenced to death for "insulting the Prophet" and "desecrating the sacred". Seyed Sadrullah Fazli Zare was a cabinetmaker before his arrest and was taking care of his elderly mother.
According to Iranian law, anyone who insults the Prophet of Islam or any other great prophets (Noah, Jesus, Moses, and Abraham) is guilty of "insulting the Prophet" and will be sentenced to death. However, the crime requires intention and will; if someone insults the Prophet by mistake or in anger, they are exempt from the death penalty.
Despite evidence showing that Yousef Mehrad had a history of religious activity, the only evidence against him is an "implicit confession", which is not sufficient to prove the charge of insulting the Prophet. The only evidence against Sadrullah Fazli is his membership in a Telegram channel that criticizes religious superstitions. Even if he participated in sharing the content, criticizing superstitions is not considered an insult to the Prophet of Islam.
