I think that I know why based on my own interpretation and publicly available information : This is part of Elon’s plan to build the Robotaxi fleet. The Tesla one that is. There will be 2 fleets: a customer owned fleet and a Tesla owned fleet.
In order to ensure car availability in certain areas where there aren’t enough customer owned fleet vehicles available, Tesla decided that as of April 15 2022 the camera/hardware suit was sufficient enough for Robotaxi-ing. Leases durations are 24-36-48 months which is why Elon is pushing hard on the Autopilot team these days ;). That’s because starting April 15 2024 some of the cars destined for the Tesla Robotaxi fleet starts coming back and Autopilot must be good enough for the TeslaFleet to exist at that time 🙂.
Breaking news : The fleet feature should start somewhere in Q2/Q3-2024. @elonmusk predicted that 2024 would have a lot new products unveiled, if all goes well, the Robotaxi fleet will be one of those 2024 mid-year unveils.
I didn’t make this up, this was all mentioned at the Tesla Autonomy Day event in 2019, you can find it here at the 3:06:00 mark.

That’s also why it’s so important for Tesla insurance to be active in enough states/countries by then.
Same for Tesla bots since they will be doing the cleaning of vehicles while they help with the charging (that’s why the automated snake-like charger is no longer relevant). You’ll probably have a few bots at every supercharger station available to clean the cars while they’re supercharging.
I know that this seems far fetched but that’s my guess based on what I’ve been reading between the lines. Feel free to correct me if you disagree 😋
SpaceX has almost finished writing V1.0 of an in-house AI training stack in C that exact-maps to 220k GB300s with 800G NICs, making heavy use of pipeline parallelism and getting as close to bare metal as possible.
The potential speed improvement vs JAX for large training runs is over an order of magnitude.
@chamath Only issue is… this is not available for retail investors. They can only short the very few (2 or 3) ETF with municipal exposure and it’s still not the same as a CDS.
For those with access to brokers to do this, I agree that it’s probably an easy bet.
@teslaownersSV Can we have at least 2 work and 2 home destinations in the car? (Instead of using favorites). Like Home1 and Home2 + Work1 and Work2. Thanks 😊
Here is my favorite Grok’s suggestion for a name more representative than “camera” (although you probably already have a better name internally) :
***
Photon Perception Unit (PPU)
-Why it works: Emphasizes the sensor’s role in counting photons and perceiving the environment, aligning with Tsai’s photon-counting analogy and Tesla’s AI-driven approach. “Unit” suggests a modular, integrated system, fitting the holistic imaging package described.
-Appeal: Sounds futuristic and technical, appealing to both engineers and enthusiasts, while distancing it from conventional camera labels.
***
The reason I mention it is because I see way too many people who think that Tesla is using just regular cameras and I have a hard time explaining that it’s not the case. I think I’ll be using PPU from now on in my explanations 😊
@YunTaTsai1 @JasonVayanos You should probably describe them as photon counters more than cameras. “FSD drives with 8 photon counters” makes more sense (also sounds cooler) and could facilitate the explanation of why lidar is not required.
@RomainHedouin@Humpidumpi2@MdeZegher During the charge you just don’t have a choice and this is for the durability of your battery. If it’s not preheated some cells might malfunction later on. You don’t want that for your battery pack…hence why you don’t have the choice for that one.
