Fans cheering for Argentina’s team are not “supporting the state” just like those trashing the team are not “critiquing the state”. I’ve participated in several protests against Milei’s regime—and I’d bet my life most of the gringos hating on Argentina haven’t—yet I still root for Messi’s groundbreaking performance.
I’ve learned from my years of organizing against racial violence across Latin America, from the 4 de Las Malvinas massacre to the ethnic cleansing of the Garífuna to the Dominican Apartheid against Haitians, that white supremacy is in no way unique or exceptional in Argentina.

The issue is not the critiques of the Argentinian state—which I actually haven’t seen any gringos make, probably because they’re too ignorant to have any knowledge of it. The issue is the sweeping generalization of Argentinian *people* as all nazis. When in fact they have such a militant leftwing history that the U.S. and the IDF massacred 30,000 of them. The U.S. doesn’t even have 30K communists to begin with. And in fact, twice the amount of nazis settled in the United States than in Argentina. Furthermore, Argentina took in 40K refugees during the holocaust, far exceeding the 5K nazis who were later allowed to resettle there yet the entire nation is stereotyped as “nazis”.

That of course doesn’t diminish at all the white supremacist character of Argentina’s capitalist state or our obligation to struggle against it. But the ridiculous claims made by Americans that “anyone rooting for Argentina is a racist” while enjoying the harvest of their nation’s massacre of the global south (including of Argentinians themselves) is hypocrisy at best and chauvinist xenophobic imperialist propaganda at worst.

Ultimately, the caricature of Argentina is counterproductive, as other members of Black Alliance for Peace have pointed out:
