𝗪𝗮𝗿, 𝗢𝗶𝗹, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗠𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘆 𝗥𝗮𝗻𝗱 🇿🇦 The South African Reserve Bank (SARB) just mapped out two possible futures for South Africa's economy. They stress tested two scenarios based on the ongoing Middle East conflict and its impact on oil prices and the Rand. 𝗦𝗰𝗲𝗻𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗼 𝟭: 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝗵𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝗦𝗵𝗼𝗰𝗸 If the conflict ends within 2 months, oil averages just under $100/barrel, and the Rand stays 5% weaker against the dollar. Then, inflation rises above 4%, the SARB hikes rates once in 2026, and we're back to the 3% inflation target by 2027. 𝗦𝗰𝗲𝗻𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗼 𝟮: 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝗹𝗼𝘄 𝗕𝘂𝗿𝗻 The war drags on for over a year, oil stays above $100/barrel, and the rand is 10% weaker. Then, inflation breaks above 5%, rates get hiked several times, and South Africa doesn't reach its new 3% inflation target until 2028. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗛𝗼𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗧𝗿𝘂𝘁𝗵 The SARB themselves admitted in today's press conference that whichever scenario plays out depends on geopolitics, something no economist can reliably predict. In 2022, they thought the Ukraine conflict would last 6 months. It's now 2026! For now, their base case is that the shock is temporary, but the next few months of data will be telling. 𝗪𝗵𝗶𝗰𝗵 𝗣𝗮𝘁𝗵 𝗗𝗼 𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸 𝗪𝗲 𝗔𝗿𝗲 𝗢𝗻?
