One hot afternoon in June 1993, the then Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) chairman Richard Leakey went to President Moi with a copy of a title deed signed by the Head of State for KWS land which had been hived and grabbed by developers.
Leakey threatened to resign his position if the illegal allocation wasnโt revoked.
Moi gave the famous green signature one look and shouted:
'This is perfect forgery. It canโt be my signature!'
Banging the table in pretended fury, the President ordered on the intercom:
'Tell Philip Mbithi and the CID (Criminal Investigations Department) head to be here right away!'
Within minutes, the civil service boss and the CID head, Noah arap Too, were in the Presidentโs office.
'I canโt allow this to happen!' Moi shouted at the two as he banged the table even harder.
'I am giving you two up to six in the evening to arrest the crooks involved.
Failure to do that, youโre jobless!'
Hours later, Mbithi telephoned the CID head to find out how far he was gone with the investigations.
'What investigations?
Thatโs the Presidentโs signature and he knows it!' replied the CID head.
'So what do we tell him when he asks?'
Mbithi wanted to know.
'I can assure you he wonโt ask', replied the CID head.
'That matter went out of his mind immediately we left his door.
It was all a show to make Leakey not quit his job!'
He made the fatal mistake of opening his heart to another manโs sons, raising them as his own, only to discover that sometimes love does not beget love: it breeds a murderous hatred. This is the deeply disturbing story of Nicholas Kamau Kagecho, a father slain by the very boys he chose to feed. THREAD๐งต
According to the Kipsigis Talai historian Mr David Tuwei, some Maasai from Purko clan came from Tanganyika in 1897 with some cows. They were heading to Baringo, reaching Angata Barigoi in Transmara a cow of one of them gave birth and the owner of the cow told a member of Kipsigis community living there to let the cow and its calf together with other cattle that included a bull to stay at his home until when the calf is strong enough to travel. The rest of the Maasai people travelled with their cows until they reached Tugen. These Maasai people from Purko clan called themselves Kaputie clan. When the owner of the cows returned to Angata to bring his cows, the owner of the homestead where he left the cows told him that some Kipsigis people stole the cows. The Maasai man told the Kipsigis people they should not have taken even his bull as such he cursed the Kipsigis that " Betok Kiruk" (you will not have leadership) here referring to all Kipsigis from 196 clans residing at Angata, Emurua Dikir, Chepalungu, Bomet, Bureti, Konoin, Sotik, Belgut, Anamoi, Kipkelion, Kuresoi, Nakuru among others areas.
and he went further to say that when the Kipsigis want him to forgive them they should give him a bull that will cross river Kipchorian. When the Kipsigis elders heard of this story, they started to look for the Kaputie people. They found them in Tugen and they told them about the story and they started looking for the family of the owner of the bull. In February this year some Kipsigis representatives went to Kaputie including David Tuei and they were told that the family whose cows were stolen in Angata was found. They came back and reported to the Kipsigis clan members.
A date has set that on 26th April this year, elders from the Kipsigis community will take the bull to Baringo to seek truce with Kaputie clan. But before then, they've lost a bull already in a chopper crash, a reminder that the curse is still haunting the community seriously.
