I was so overwhelmed by La Bola Negra. It's so arresting, so grand but so intimate and absolutely special. I have never seen a queer film like this before ever in my life. It dug into my heart and under my skin. It's so, so beautiful. I don't have the right words.

La Bola Negra: that’s filmmaking firing on all cylinders. An 80 year-spanning epic from the start of the Spanish Civil War to the present, exploring love, masculinity, and the importance of digging beneath the surface of established history. There is so much to appreciate in the visuals, from the battle sequence tracking shots, to the static interior shots that have packed the frame with subtle details; the editing pulls off a magic trick stitching multiple timelines, but it was the film’s sound design that most impressed me. There has been such care paid to the clinks, squeaks, cracks, and booms that populate the film, intertwine with the music, and establish connections between the story’s generational threads. There are lengthy sequences you still could appreciate watching with your eyes closed. #telluride
