Join a tradition which has been a vital part of the Miners’ Gala since 1897, as Durham Cathedral hosts the poignant ceremony during which the Bishop of Durham blesses new or restored colliery banners. This year features Langley Park and Ludworth.

An explosion at Usworth Colliery claimed the lives of 42 miners #OnThisDay in 1885.

The youngest victim was 14 years old. The oldest 75.
