@DocPriyamMD I think there's are 2 main reasons. For some their identity is solely wrapped up in being a (PhD) doctor. For others, "I have full respect for the grind, BUT..." doesn't feel like you do. I'm not saying you do/don't. If just feels that way. Human nature then makes them defensive.

@TimSullivan714 Giving grades is a way of signaling. Employers should be able to distinguish a C at Harvard is different than a typical institution. Inflating grades provides less information.

@PhdDfs In grad school I had a student show up for a final exam. This was literally the first time I saw him. I doubled check to make sure he was in my class. I then told him since he had zero on everything else, there was no need to take the exam. He said okay and then got up and left.
