The water numbers just never added up. It was going to save ‘billions’ but the only way I could see was through centralising the ‘cost’ and claiming it as a ‘saving’ for ratepayers. The overall claimed savings were just a PowerPoint that amounted to ‘well this is the cost in Scotland and this is the projected cost here’ and the difference was the ‘saving’ attributed entirely to the system operating in Scotland. The taxpayer contribution was vague and probably unfunded. I had detailed knowledge all the way through, and there were so many holes it was laughable. There are gains to be had but they weren’t going to realise them. It was quickly a captured ideological drive to political ownership objectives and the critical analysis of efficiencies became irrelevant. The only solution once that happened was to blow it all up and start again.

It is mostly tax exemptions in the form of foregone gst receipts. We don’t get 200m back if they leave rather we don’t get the gst on contractor salaries which we give back to them. The industry is such that destinations compete for spillover benefits in the IT trade and future production. It’s not an open and shut case of subsidy at all. Do we want to compete in this industry is a valid question though.

@TheNzRocketeer @CottleMan Yeah but race is not a sufficient shortcut to that. If I had someone of same gender, age, wealth, education etc then they might ‘get’ me more- but this is not summarised by colour of skin.

In response to the article: I disagree with your analysis. Corporations benefit from bad regulation more often than not. You have an unwarranted rise tinted glass view when you say that requiring good regulation is profit driven. It’s not, your strawman regarding smoking regulation is never going to happen, rather the times when property rights are taken under the radar is in fact a pernicious problem. Sunlight is a good disinfectant.
