Sustainable waste management at dump sites implemented by the local authority can create jobs for these people which can assist in improving their livelihoods.
People who scavenge for waste at the Tsumeb dumpsite say some municipal refuse workers select cans and other waste that appear more valuable than the rest before dumping it at the site, making it difficult for them to survive.
Waste pickers Hans Kamab and Deon Ganeb say that in recent years they mostly survived on expired food dumped at the site, but that too is no longer being dumped there.
They accuse some municipal refuse employees of keeping it for themselves and not dumping it at the dumpsite.

A South African High Court sentenced Kelly Smith to life in prison plus an additional 10-year jail term for kidnapping.
Smith is the mother of Joshlin Smith, who disappeared from Saldanha Bay, Western Cape, South Africa, in February 2024, at the age of six.
The court found that Joshlin was sold for R20,000.
The judge said Kelly Smith manipulated the facts during the trial to suit herself and that the evidence presented was clear. He also noted that Joshlin's mother showed little remorse throughout the trial.
Jacquen "Boeta" Appollis, Kelly Smith's boyfriend, and Steveno van Rhyn, a friend of the couple, were also sentenced to life imprisonment plus 10 years for kidnapping.
Their names will be entered into the National Child Protection Register.
