The warming projections that freaked the world out then are all now effectively baked in. Things could get much worse from there. RCP8.5 has not looked plausible as an emissions future for some time — as I wrote in 2019, and again in 2022 — but we are far from out of the woods.
Note the final sentence of this paragraph outlined by Zeke (after the highlight). The authors were identifying how it wasn’t just high-end of range emissions-forcings outcomes in CMIP6 which had become “implausible”, but also that some low-end trajectories in CMIP6 have also now been surpassed.
Thats certainly a take. Here is what the new paper introducing the emissions scenarios we are using in the upcoming IPCC 7th Assessment Report actually says:
In the next two years, both CHPE and Empire Wind 1 are going to begin the transformation of NYC's grid for a clean energy future. Much more needed, but it's an important start.

The Greater Harlem Chamber of Commerce and @columbiaclimate convened a great group of researchers and leaders to discuss ways to deepen collaboration for environmental justice and climate action.
I wrote about it here.
Now in its 5th year, Climate & Environmental Justice in NYC highlighted the critical climate-driven health and environmental impacts affecting our shared community, writes @Columbia chief climate/sustainability officer @dzarrilli via State of the Planet: https://t.co/c1jd71v7Lc
Great coverage in the @ColumbiaSpec of last Thursday’s #EarthDay celebration. Climate change is having real impacts in our own community and it takes strong collaboration to deliver real solutions.
Even more than in the past, it is clear today that the proliferation of armed conflicts is often driven by the exploitation of oil and mineral deposits, with no regard for international law or the self-determination of peoples.
On Apr 23 5:30pm ET, join researchers, elected officials, and community leaders for Climate & Environmental Justice in NYC, presented by the Greater Harlem Chamber of Commerce and @columbiaclimate, moderated by @Columbia's @dzarrilli. #EarthDay RSVP: https://t.co/rCjUYq23HM
New models are needed to bring private capital into climate adaptation and resilience projects that serve the public good. I spoke with @grist@TikRoot about a new @c40cities report, which highlights the path forward and the challenges ahead.
A new report highlights how resilience projects from the Netherlands to Malaysia offer a model for tapping private investment to protect cities from climate change. https://t.co/gAJlU41rF4
