Andy Burnham’s reply when asked a question about farming at the Dispatch Box this week was shocking.

‘I'm probably not renowned for spending much time on farms. I'm more likely to be found in the northern quarter of Manchester’

I couldn’t believe the Prime Minister of a country - especially one wanting growth in every postcode - would know so little about farming particularly given the battering the farming sector has taken over the last few years what with Labour’s family farm tax, the rise in energy prices and fuel and fertiliser costs, the impact the bad weather has had, and now with the bluetongue outbreak and the lack of vaccines.

His staggering answer confirmed what we already knew. Labour knows nothing about farming & rural life & cares very little about it too - if it did - it would never have brought in the family farm tax.

Der Stromanbieter: nur noch online, mit E-Mail-Adresse. Hat sie nicht.
Der Wasserversorger: ein QR-Code auf dem Brief. Sie hat ihn ans Fenster gehalten – sie dachte, er muss ins Licht.
Der Internetanbieter: 40 Minuten Warteschleife, dann die Ansage, es doch bitte übers Kundenportal zu machen.
Ich hab drei Abende gebraucht. Sie saß daneben und hat sich zehnmal entschuldigt. Für Dinge, die nicht ihre Schuld waren.
Sie hat keine Familie mehr. Kein Enkel, der mal eben vorbeikommt.

Ohne einen Nachbarn, der zufällig Zeit hat, hätte sie diese Verträge nicht abschließen können. Punkt.

Jahrzehntelang hat sie alles selbst geregelt. Heute scheitert sie an einem Muster auf Papier.

Wann haben wir eigentlich entschieden, dass Grundversorgung nur noch für die gilt, die ein Smartphone bedienen können?

Small examples of Broken Britain.

I land back in the UK after flying @British_Airways - The WiFi on the plane does not work. Then I wait over an hour for the bags. No updates. No explanation. No idea when they will arrive. @British_Airways customer service is rude and utterly unhelpful.

People travelling with very young children are simply told to wait or leave their bags at the airport. It is now 1am. I’m told these delays have been happening all summer because there aren’t enough baggage handlers working at night.

Then, as if to complete the experience, the airport lifts go down because of a power cut. I can’t even access the floor where the car is parked. None of the staff seem to know what to do. Their only suggestion is to find some stairs somewhere and carry all the bags up five flights of stairs.

None of these things, individually, is a national catastrophe. That is precisely the point.

They are small, everyday examples of a country where increasingly nothing works properly, nobody seems accountable and the public is simply expected to put up with it.

This is what Broken Britain looks like. Not one spectacular failure, but thousands of small failures becoming normal.
