Everyone's rushing to add llms.txt to their sites. I get it โ it sounds like a quick win for AI visibility.
But I checked my own server logs, and the data tells a different story.
GPTBot, ClaudeBot, Google-Extended, PerplexityBot โ they're hitting robots.txt. They're hitting sitemaps. They're reading your HTML and structured data. The llms.txt file? Rarely fetched.
That's not me dunking on the convention. It's probably worth adding as cheap static insurance. But if it's the only thing you've done, you've optimised for the wrong signal.
So I built a free Windows tool to fix that.
Tom's AI Discovery Kit crawls your site, gives you a single AI-readiness score, and generates the full package of discovery and crawler-control files that AI bots actually consume:
โ robots.txt AI-crawler rules (merges additively, never overwrites yours)
โ sitemap.xml and ai-sitemap.xml with per-URL last-modified dates
โ ai-discovery.json and knowledge-graph.json from what it finds on your pages
โ tdmrep.json to declare your training opt-in/out position
โ llms.txt family files included too โ with an honest note on current adoption
Everything runs locally. Single portable EXE. No account, no cloud, nothing uploaded.
If you manage a site and you're not sure whether AI crawlers can actually find and understand it, this will tell you โ and give you the files to fix it.

And if you want the data behind the llms.txt claim, I wrote it up here: https://t.co/V5BLoxjCKH
