“You can tell the economic character of a nation by the way its infrastructure works.”

Powerful words from George Monbiot on BBC Question Time explaining how Wales’s economy was built to extract wealth rather than enrich its own people, and why we need the powers to put that right.

I see places like Cardiff have their green waste collections all year round. Is this something you are considering @CarmsCouncil? With garden clear up etc we get a lot of green waste.

@DonnaWarburton1 @ifanmj Maybe we have a different thought on wooly stuff. I see it as arts, drama and vocational etc.
The system didn't work for everyone when I was in school, when my children were and now for my grandchildren. It doesn't suit everyone.

@DonnaWarburton1 @ifanmj Don't think there's a simple answer though I feel that it's some of the 'woolly stuff' that helps create better human beings.

@PensionsSimon They don't make celebrities like they used to Simon. If you do a couple of podcasts you could be on the next series.

@ceritheviking Winds me up for sure. Town council etc should be about doing what's best for the town and residents. Party politics should be nowhere near it.

STEPHEN KINNOCK WANTS EVIDENCE. HERE IT IS.

Commenting today on calls for further devolution, the new Secretary of State for Wales, Stephen Kinnock, said:

“I think we have to be evidence-based and it’s really important to look at what are the costs and benefits of making change.”

Fair enough. Here’s the evidence.

Over the past 15 years, independent commissions and constitutional reviews have repeatedly examined Welsh devolution. Their conclusion has been consistent: the settlement is incomplete and Wales should have further powers.

2012–14 – Silk Commission

Set up by David Cameron’s Conservative-led UK Government, it recommended tax and borrowing powers, a reserved-powers model, and the further devolution of policing, youth justice, energy and transport.

The Wales Acts of 2014 and 2017 implemented some of this, including tax and borrowing powers and the reserved-powers model. But major recommendations, including policing and youth justice, were left untouched.

2019 – Commission on Justice in Wales

Chaired by former Lord Chief Justice Lord Thomas of Cwmgiedd, it concluded that separating devolved Welsh services from a non-devolved justice system was inefficient and unsustainable. It recommended devolving justice and policing.

2022 – Gordon Brown’s Commission on the UK’s Future

Commissioned by Labour, it recommended further powers for Wales, including youth justice and probation.

2024 – Independent Commission on the Constitutional Future of Wales

After more than two years of work, including extensive evidence gathering and public consultation, the cross-party commission unanimously concluded that the status quo was not sustainable. It recommended devolving justice and policing, rail services and infrastructure, and the Crown Estate, reforming the energy devolution settlement, strengthening the Sewel Convention, and reforming relations between the Welsh and UK governments.

These are only four examples. Senedd committees and expert reports have also called for further devolution in areas including rail, broadcasting, justice, energy and the Crown Estate.

So yes, let’s be evidence-based.

The evidence has been gathered repeatedly, and it is overwhelming.

Successive UK governments have repeatedly stopped short of implementing the most significant recommendations, and the new Welsh Secretary seems unaware of the weight of evidence supporting further devolution.

Further powers would be welcome and important, but devolution will always leave Wales dependent on powers granted or withheld by Westminster. Only independence would put the full range of powers and economic levers in Wales’s own hands, giving us the freedom to shape our own future.

🧠 Why Don’t Students Like School? by Daniel Willingham is one of the most influential books for teachers on cognitive science. It explores how students’ minds work and how to use this knowledge to be a better teacher.

TOP 5 TAKEAWAYS!

1/ 🧠 Working memory has limited space, and thinking becomes increasingly difficult as it gets crowded. ‘Unless the cognitive conditions are right, we avoid thinking.’ Promote challenging cognitive work by reviewing each lesson in terms of what students will THINK about.

2/ 📚 ‘Background knowledge from our long-term memory helps us to make sense of new information.’ Knowledge is best learned when it is conceptual and facts are interrelated. Guide students to learn the unifying ideas of each discipline—the most common concepts.

3/ 💭 Students remember what they THINK about—‘memory is the residue of thought.’ Effective teachers connect personally with students and organise material to make it interesting and easy to understand. E.g. through storytelling... Stories have a familiar and memorable structure!

4/ 🧱 ‘Understanding is disguised remembering,’ because every new idea is built on existing ones. Develop deep knowledge by working with the same idea in different ways. Support learning with multiple examples and guide students to categorise, compare and contrast ideas.

5/ 🏋️ ‘It is virtually impossible to become proficient at a mental task without extended practice.’ Practice helps make mental processes automatic, reducing the demand on working memory capacity. Prioritise giving students ample practice with the knowledge and skills they need to master.

Not sure how this will go, think some overreach, but definitely one to watch.
But what it does highlight for plaid, for much of welsh Twitter - focus needs to be on wealth and capital
