Jean-Luc Godard's death in 2022 was said to mark the end of politically committed cinema.
In Japan, Masao Adachi — at age 87, stripped of his passport, still working — never got the memo: https://t.co/E5FMvcNuML
Japanese filmmaker Masao Adachi spent nearly three decades in Lebanon alongside the Palestinian resistance.
Today, stripped of his passport and largely ignored at home, he’s making the most politically alive cinema in Japan at 87 years old. https://t.co/E5FMvcNuML
Nice to see Sabzian’s autumn book release roundup for 2026. Lots of exciting tomes, including William Andrews’s (@TokyoStages) "Pink Auteur, Red Outlaw: Adachi Masao and Japan’s Cinema of Revolution." Thanks for including it!

A big thanks to Noah Oskow at Unseen Japan for giving “Pink Auteur, Red Outlaw” such a thorough and nuanced reading, and for asking difficult, important questions.
Much to think about in this review and interview with biographer William Andrews.

Adachi Masao has been many things in his long life: underground filmmaker, theorist, radical activist - and wanted guerrilla in Lebanon with the Japanese Red Army. We review William Andrews' fascinating new book on Adachi's career, ethos, and radical activities, below:

New release! Very happy with how this book by William Andrews (@TokyoStages) came out, and grateful to have had the chance to publish it. William spent nearly a decade working on the biography, drawing on extensive interviews with filmmaker and controversial political activist Adachi Masao. If you’re interested in cinema, the Middle East, Japan, or 20th-century cultural history, this is well worth reading. The book also features charming illustrations by Milan Nagai, and the cover is another by the enormously talented David Matthew Davis. A huge thanks to everyone who helped make this possible.
We're very curious to hear what readers in Japan and elsewhere are making of “Pink Auteur, Red Outlaw,” our new biography of Adachi Masao by William Andrews (@TokyoStages).
very excited to read PINK AUTEUR, RED OUTLAW: ADACHI MASAO & JAPAN'S CINEMA OF REVOLT by @TokyoStages, & since I know a lot of film writers here, gotta say, it could make a good joint review with this here Robert Kramer tome
Enjoyed reading and reviewing this compelling biography of Adachi Masao, the enfant terrible of Japanese cinema. Watched a couple of his "pink films" with a dramatic change in perspective.
