I am delighted to share our last work on the in vitro evolution of a SARS-CoV-2 variant able to escape from a COVID-19 neutralizing plasma. @FondazioneTLS @VisMederi@AreaSciencePark@RommieAmaro Lab @McLellan_Lab

Our new work on monoclonal antibodies to fight #gonorrhea just got out on @ScienceTM!
We are unleashing the full power of antibodies to accelerate vaccine development and new solutions to #AMR

Why do #mengingococcus vaccines partially protect against #gonorrhea?
Researchers identify antigens responsible for cross-protection and identify cross-reactive antibodies that can shield mice from gonococcus infection. @e_andreano @FondazioneTLS https://t.co/sbsQlS3W3n
Over the last 4 years our immune system kept evolving to fight SARS-CoV-2. In our last work, published on @CellReports, we longitudinally analyzed different cohorts to understand the evolution of the antibody response to SARS-CoV-2.

We interrogated our panel of almost 900 neutralizing human monoclonal antibodies to understand how JN.1 was able to evade the antibody response and become the main SARS-CoV-2 variant worldwide.

SARS-CoV-2 JN.1 variant L455S sequence abolishes the neutralizing antibody response of the publicly shared IGHV3-53/3-66, contributing to its global spread @SciImmunology@e_andreano Rappuoli

@KonLontos In addition, it also depends from the individual pre-exposure to the virus. If you already had Omicron infection, the heterogenous exposure to SARS-CoV-2 S proteins (Wuhan + omicron) imporves the response
How the unceasing interplay between B cell response and SARS-CoV-2 pushed their continuous evolution? To answer this question we interrogated a panel of almost 1,000 neutralizing human monoclonal antibodies built over the last three years. Check it out: https://t.co/kWnDjm2l3t
@KonLontos It seems that this is due to the presence of pre-expanded and hypermutated B cell germlines ready to be restored and that, after additional maturation, can be re-employed to control the new variant.
... and this 'impossible review' on the future of cell & molecular biology marks the Amaro Lab's 200th paper
🍾🤓💜
So grateful & proud of this wonderful group, all members, past & present, helping make these impossible (nerd) dreams come true! 🥰❤️
We are standing on the cusp of a new era of biology, where the integration of multimodal structural datasets with multiscale physics-based simulation will enable the development of visible, virtual cells.
My dream for #COVIDisAirborne@kprather88 & the molecular basis of life 😍❤️🤓

#AMR is a silent pandemic and new tools are needed to treat and prevent bacterial infection.
In our latest work, we have identified human monoclonal antibodies able to kill Gonococcus, a bacterium resistant to almost all class of antibiotics.
