You'd think a fire put out days ago would stay out. This one hasn't.

Geoff Eyre was driving past the Crowden and Arnfield moors yesterday when he saw green molinia and bracken still back-burning kilometres from where the fire started, with peat smoke drifting across two hillsides towards Dovestones. Geoff has farmed these hills for 60 years and spent 30 restoring Derbyshire moorland, so he knows exactly what he's looking at.

This ground is managed to stay wet, with little or no controlled burning. Geoff's view, from a lifetime doing the work, is that wet peat alone hasn't made this moor fire-resilient, and that the public and water company money spent getting it wet should be audited on results.

It's a point we keep making to policymakers: wet moorland doesn't resist fire on its own, it needs land managers to reduce the dangerous fuel loads that have been allowed to build up.

@1GarethWynJones Hope livestock and people are safe. I'm not far away from the #Dovestones fire. Smoke just about missing us, if wind changes by 10° house will be locked down, because of the smoke.

Chew Valley - you can just make out the Dovestones reservoir dam - smoke filling the valley- the fire has spread up the hillside to the moors above. Very strong wind through the valleys. It would have been packed with people most at low level but some will be up on the moors. I hope they are OK. The smoke was catching my throat and I'm a mile away.
