Seaside represents so much more than beach volleyball. Going to Seaside means you likely took PTO, organized a team(sometimes several), coordinated travel, accommodations, and set aside the budget.

Tribe by Sebastian Junger talks about how we grow away from others and spend more time alone as we age, especially in the west. This has a detrimental effect on our mental wellbeing. Hobbies foster community and are a integral ingredient to mental health.

Coordinating groups, maintaining community equipment, sharing snacks/water, post-play meals, and group skill development are just a few characteristics that I think foster this uniquely nurturing community.

I haven't been in a few years however the annual tournament always serves as a reminder of the impact and importance of the beach volleyball community. Like many hobbies, the non-volleyball activities are just as intrinsic as the gameplay.

Move the puppies to get in position, square to your target. Gently extend the entire body from the ankles, knees, and hips while setting the ball with the hands.

Hand setting starts with the feet and the entire body participates. We tend to focus on the hands because the hands are touching the vollbeyball. The skill really progresses when you realize the hands are simply the uppermost part of the foundation which is the entire body.
