Before a woman entered another family, she was not prepared by words alone. She was prepared spiritually, psychologically, culturally and, within traditional practice, through medicine. Her people understood that she was entering a household whose history she did not fully know. She was therefore strengthened before crossing that threshold, not simply for marriage, but for the life and environment she was about to enter.

This preparation was considered especially important because not every household was understood to be free from hostility, jealousy, resentment or harmful spiritual practices. There could be tensions and hidden conflicts within families that an outsider would have no way of knowing.

In some traditional understandings, there were also families where people were believed to harbour intentions against a woman entering the household, including questions about whether she would have children or whether the marriage would produce sons or daughters. In such contexts, a young woman could become the subject of scrutiny, envy or harmful intentions simply because she was entering that particular lineage.

This is why traditional preparation went beyond giving her advice about marriage. It was intended to strengthen her psychologically, spiritually and culturally, while traditional medicine could also form part of the preparation according to the practices and beliefs of her community. She was being prepared not only to become a wife, but to enter an unfamiliar family environment with strength, awareness and the support of her own people.

Much of this knowledge is disappearing today. The elders who understood these practices and the reasoning behind them are becoming fewer, while many younger generations are growing up without receiving the explanations that once accompanied them. Modern life has brought new forms of knowledge and opportunity, but it has also created a distance between many African people and the traditional systems through which previous generations understood major transitions in life.

The point is not that everything from the past must be accepted without question. Traditional knowledge can be examined, questioned and understood within its historical and cultural context. But neither should it be dismissed simply because it belongs to an older generation. Some traditions were built around a sophisticated understanding that major changes in a person’s life require preparation, protection, guidance and community support.

A woman entering another family was therefore not regarded as merely changing her surname or moving into another household. She was crossing a social, cultural and, within the traditional worldview, spiritual threshold. Her preparation reflected the understanding that she was entering a history that existed before her and a family environment whose realities she could not fully know.

Perhaps this is one of the forms of knowledge we need to recover: not necessarily by reproducing every old practice exactly as it was, but by understanding the wisdom, concerns and social responsibilities that gave those practices meaning.

Progress should not require cultural amnesia. We can enter the future without becoming strangers to the knowledge that shaped our past.🍃🫶🏽
