It is essential for the Government to return the lower 9% VAT rate for small, local restaurants, cafés and other food-led businesses so that we can secure a sustainable future for our industry.

The 188 owners of restaurants and cafés that have been forced to close since July frequently list the 50% increase in the VAT rate from 9 to 13.5% in September as the single greatest contributor to them having to close their doors. They warn that, without a change in policy, many other businesses will be forced to close in 2024.

CEO of the Restaurants Association of Ireland, @AdrianCummins, joined @TonightVMTV last night to call on the Government to decouple the VAT rate of struggling food-led businesses from accommodation businesses such as hotels which are far more profitable and have recovered well since the pandemic.

The separation of the VAT rates for food-led businesses and accommodation is both practical and also necessary to avoid the unprecedented level of restaurant and café closures we are currently witnessing nationwide continuing throughout next year.
