The Eastern Broccoli Project was made possible both by the great funding from SCRI, and the challenge to take on a big problem needing a transdisciplinary solution. I learned the jargon of seed sales, new-generation sequencing and behavioral economics from the team.

A broccoli variety adapted to eastern North America was not on the to-do list for seed companies. The Eastern Broccoli Project changed that. After a considerable amount of work and collaboration, NorthStar has been released by @BejoSeeds. https://t.co/VWAq943ZlH
This research explains how fungicide-resistant alternaria blight was popping up in new places. It also provides the assay that allows seed companies to screen for the seedborne disease so that this is no longer a source of infestation. Tremendous work!

More and more of the vegetables people buy come in plastic clamshells. The convenience and food safety outweigh the cost and environmental consequences for many consumers.
@CCAGaryEngland@UF_HAEC The regional teamwork paid off many ways. A couple big NY growers bought land in Florida to extend their season. The FL group also produced Andre DaSilva, star prof at Auburn.
Bejo's efforts to provide high-quality organic and organic-treated broccoli seed is a valuable contribution to this industry. The tech is also a great platform for validating seed-applied biological inocula.
