@LAppiah@CBSSunday@Faith_Salie If only our news professionals could work in the environment that existed in the days before Roone Arledge, before news was repackaged as an entertainment product.
Anybody who thinks we’re just going to vote our way out of this hasn’t read much history. People with utter contempt for democratic norms and the law won’t go quietly.
This is absolutely crazy. It is unilateral disarmament. China won’t be closing CGTN. Russia won’t be closing RT. The theocrats in Iran and their proxies in the Middle East won’t be closing down their media operations.
Didn’t see that at the time and supported the No direction.
Can see the wisdom of the Yes now.
@SenWhitehouse made it make sense also and he seems to make it clear his No vote was simple window dressing.
When I see folks lambasting Schumer for agreeing to vote FOR the CR, I immediately know they do not know what is actually going on.
Should the CR pass: We know what they want to do within the government. We know the bills, the language, everything. We would have a legal backstop of sorts, should Don exceed the expanded powers the CR gives him. There is legal precedent.
Should the government remain in a shutdown situation for months: Don can declare emergency after emergency which would expand his powers in any way he wants and in ways that have not been legally tested at all. This would give DOGE carte blanche to furlough and lay off hundreds of thousands of gov employees, replace them with Maga loyalists from the Heritage/P25 database, create new EO's that would not be legally tested, impair the federal court system for everyone, and Don would get away with (legally) impoundment.
There is no good solution. You either choose the path in which you have some legal recourse, some guardrails (or at least what the actual expansion of powers entails, in writing), and some idea what will happen. Then one can fight it all step by step. OR, you choose to give Don near-total power with no clue what he will do or when.
So yes, when I see ANYONE lambast Schumer, who is nowhere near a fave of mine, I know there is a lack of understanding of what is at stake and what can happen should the government shutdown with Don in office.
Schumer is choosing the devil he knows, versus the devil he doesn't. It's a horrible choice and a horrible situation - the lesser of two terrible evils.
Every Senate Dem. should vote NO on cloture and NO on the CR. No self-respecting Democratic lawmaker who takes his or her responsibility to their constituents and the constitution seriously can vote for this despicable Trump/Musk power grab CR. Why should Dems roll over and play dead when they were completely cut out and presented with a shit sandwich? Why give Trump a bipartisan imprimatur to gut the government?
WTF? @SenSchumer please grow a spine. And quickly.
Everyone needs to call their Dem Senator right now. They are starting to cave.
Tell them:
1. Vote NO on Cloture
AND
2. Vote NO on the Republican spending bill.
Don’t let them pivot to reconciliation. GOP doesn’t need Dem votes on that and they know it.
TODAY is the showdown.
It should be very clear to every Senate Democrat that any vote for Cloture will also be considered a vote for the bill.
People aren’t going to be tricked with procedural games.
They know exactly what is going on.
Defend Medicaid.
Vote NO on Cloture.
NO on bill.
There were howls of protest and denial from the GOP any time we pointed out that Republicans want to cut Social Security.
Now the most powerful official in the White House goes on TV and calls it "the big one to eliminate."
