Even in QOTD, we don’t learn Maharet’s story, the real story of Akasha’s reign, until more than halfway through the book, and it’s only then that we learn she was a tyrant and monster before she was ever a vampire. You don’t have to let the tale seduce you, but let it be a tale!

As a reminder, the first story we’re told about Akasha in TVL is that she was such a wise and compassionate ruler that her subjects saw her as the personification of the Good Mother. The first myth is that Enkil bravely confronted a demon rather than being attacked in vengeance.
