[The Nobel Prize @NobelPrize]

Today we remember chemistry laureate Ada Yonath who passed away yesterday at the age of 87.

At the beginning of the twentieth century, the chemical foundations for life were a mystery. Today we know how many of the most important processes function, all the way down to the atomic level. This is due in part to the work of biochemist, Ada Yonath.

In the 1970s, Yonath began a project that culminated in 2000 with her successful mapping (together with other researchers) of the structure of ribosomes – the cell’s own protein factory – by using x-ray crystallography. Among other applications, this has been important in the production of antibiotics.

In 2009, Yonath shared the Nobel Prize in Chemistry with Venkatraman Ramakrishnan and Thomas Steitz for studies of the structure and function of the ribosome.

Yapay zeka ile ilgili bir çok konu, ekonomik eşitsizlikler, çalışma hayatının geleceği, yaşlanan dünya ve iklim değişimi gibi hepsi birbirinden önemli konularla baş edebilmek için gerekli olan toplumsal mutabakatı sağlamanın yolu her zamankinden daha güçlü kurumlara sahip olmaktan geçiyor. Temennim, bu ödülün vurgusunun dünyada kurumları ve demokrasiyi güçlendirmenin ne kadar zorlu bir mücadele gerektirdiğine ışık tutacak olması.

Turkey's main opposition party managed to defeat the ruling alliance, delivering the biggest election defeat of Erdogan's career. Despite an uneven playing field, gov't candidates have lost even in conservative strongholds. This is CHP's best results since the 1977 elections.

Since I joined Twitter in 2016, I haven't seen such optimism among Turks opposed, for one reason or another, to Erdoğan, Islamism, illiberalism, autocracy, corruption, or all at once. There's a shared sense that Turkey is beginning at last to turn the page.
