Could a dead goat poisoned to kill free-ranging dogs have been the cause of death for 25 vultures in Semaria village of Bahadurnagar gram panchayat in Uttar Pradesh’s Lakhimpur Kheri district?
That question is lingering in the minds of many locals and officials after the discovery of bird carcasses sent shockwaves in the area.

The Earth’s climate swings more out of balance, as greenhouse gases continue to warm the atmosphere, ocean & ice. These changes have happened in just a few decades but will have harmful effects for hundreds of years.

Gujarat sees a GIB chick after a decade, through a novel conservation measure - the jumpstart approach, coordinated by the Ministry, State Forest Departments of Rajasthan and Gujarat, and Wildlife Institute of India.
Envisioned by PM Shri @narendramodi ji in 2011 to conserve GIB in its natural habitats including Gujrat, Project GIB was launched in 2016.
As a result the number of birds in conservation breeding centres, started at Sam and Ramdevra in Rajasthan, have reached 73 with addition of 5 new chicks in this season and we are moving ahead towards rewilding of birds in near future.
In achieving another milestone, a female GIB, tagged in August 2025, had laid an infertile egg in Kutch, as this population has lost all its males long back. In a major trans-state conservation effort, a captive-bred GIB egg from the conservation breeding program in Rajasthan was transported by road over 19 hours in a handheld portable incubator and was replaced in the nest on 22 March.
The female completed incubating this fertile egg and hatched it on March 26. The field monitoring team found the young chick being reared by its foster mother.
This effort is among one of the many steps to recover the critically endangered Great Indian Bustard populations.
With the commitment to save GIB, we are making great progress in India’s conservation journey.
Congratulations to all scientists, field officers and wildlife enthusiasts who made this possible.
We are keeping our fingers crossed for the survival of the chick. At the same time we remain committed to leaving no stone unturned to make the endeavour successful.

A. Rishi Kumar, a final-year student of Tamil Nadu National Law University (TNNLU), did not bow to pressure from the University to delete the article, titled “The Supreme Court of India has no Spine”. Here he criticised the Supreme Court’s ban on a Class 8 NCERT civics textbook and its decision to blacklist its authors for their mention of judicial corruption.
He wrote "The Court has decided, in its grand old wisdom, that eighth graders, who are doing algebra and learning refractions, are simply too dumb to handle a basic civics chapter that spends fourteen pages praising the judiciary and two paragraphs acknowledging its flaws."
My respect to Rishi. You are awesome!

In a quiet corner in @MudumalaiTR lies a local solution to the #LPG crisis & helping stem the foxing issue of #Lantana an aggressive invasive weed chocking forests (occupies over 40% #tiger reserves) across #India.
So here is what @tnforestdeptis doing, with help of trained & employed local tribals:
Systematically remove the #lantana → reduce them to chips → transport to factory →pulverise to fine, uniform powder →solar dry →dry lantana compressed, binded w/o binders using only press & heat→cooled, cured, packaged. And voila, you have lantana #briquettes that provide highly efficient cooking fuel in grt demand in surrounding #teaestaes & schools.
Essentially invasive weed → cooking fuel replacing firewood & restored #forests.
The #Muddumalai mgt cannot keep up with the demand.

In Panchkula, near the Khair forest area, more than 10,000 trees were cut overnight using silent cutters.
Khair wood is expensive, and the logs were transported on camels.
To avoid suspicion, the remaining stumps were burned.
This came to the notice of a forest guard named Vijay Kumar.
He said his father was a gardener, and seeing trees being cut felt like losing a part of his own family.
He raised a complaint with the forest minister.
But instead of action, he was suspended.
He is now sitting on a protest alone.
All this is happening in Haryana, where forest cover is already very low, around 3.25 percent.
So far, the issue has received very little media attention.

VIDEO | People hold protest at India Gate against air pollution in Delhi.
A protester says, "Private monitors show that the air quality index has crossed 999 at several locations. Instead of taking concrete action, authorities are shutting down a peaceful protest. What are people asking for? Their right to breathe. For the last 15 days, we haven’t heard anything — no lockdown, no shutdown. There are only stories about cloud seeding or other distractions. It’s a very unfortunate situation."
The air quality in the city remained in the 'very poor' category on Sunday morning, with the overall Air Quality Index recorded at 391, according to the Central Pollution Control Board.
