The Holy See’s Dicastery for the Doctrine of Faith, headed by Cardinal Fernandez, has formally excommunicated the bishops associated with the Society of Saint Pius X for consecrating four new bishops without papal approval.

It further warns that any clergy or lay faithful who formally align themselves with the Priestly Fraternity of Saint Pius X are to be considered schismatic and likewise incur excommunication by that very adherence.
