Any sentimentality about capitalism is a fool's errand, but the end of Hollywood - and that is what we're witnessing, regardless of what happens with Paramount - is more than sentimentality.
For a hundred years, the movies did what Harper Lee said of mockingbirds - they “don’t do one thing but make music for us to enjoy. They don’t eat up people’s gardens, don’t nest in corncribs, they don’t do one thing but sing their hearts out for us.”
Hollywood didn't poison our rivers or use up our resources; it paid its employees better than almost any industry, its product (for most of those 100 years) could be afforded by almost anyone. Movies were at the center of our public sphere, our greatest export, the greatest argument for our way of life. As Frank Capra put it, “No saint, no pope, no general, no sultan, has ever had the power that a filmmaker has; the power to talk to hundreds of millions of people for two hours in the dark.”
To know that power is going away, that Hollywood has been destroyed from within - by the greed and incompetence of people with no understanding of creativity, who have reduced this miracle of communication to the terrible word "content" - is crushing for those of us who've lived our fortunate lives in this business. Of course the business will go on churning out content - and some of it will still be great - but it will never be what it was, and my heart goes out to so many younger people who will never realize that dream of holding audiences spellbound for two hours in the dark.

Prince William Will Be the First British Monarch Descended From Charles II — Through His Mother

The Windsors do not descend from the Merry Monarch. He left no legitimate children at all. The Spencers do, several times over.

Princess Diana descended from Charles II twice through acknowledged illegitimate sons — the ancestors of the Dukes of Grafton and of Richmond — and once more from his brother James II through an acknowledged illegitimate daughter. Those lines run down to her, and through her to her sons.

One correction to how this is usually told. The current royal family already descends from the Stuarts: the Hanoverian succession came through Sophia, granddaughter of James VI and I, which is the whole basis of the 1701 Act of Settlement. What is genuinely new is descent from Charles II specifically — the line that was excluded from the throne because it was illegitimate rather than because it was Stuart.

Genealogists have pointed out for years that she carried more historic English royal blood than the family she married into, whose ancestry runs heavily through German princely houses. She was also a distant cousin of Winston Churchill through the Spencer-Churchill line of the Dukes of Marlborough, and American researchers have traced links from her family to several US presidents.

The Spencers themselves served the Crown for five centuries — as courtiers, sheriffs and ladies-in-waiting — on a fortune originally built in sheep farming. She grew up at Park House on the Sandringham estate in Norfolk, and was working as an assistant at a kindergarten in Pimlico, in London, when the engagement was announced.

When her son is eventually crowned, a line that was locked out of the succession three hundred years ago will arrive on the throne anyway — through Althorp rather than through the palace.

The Saudis confirm the attack on their pipeline came from Iraq. Which means that, from a Saudi perspective:

1. Hormuz - their export route to the North - is closed by a war with Iran that the US-Israel started
2. Their pipeline to the South was taken offline from Iraq, a country the US broke with another war it started
3. They're fighting - and losing - against the Houthis in Yemen, whose war against them restarted because of the US-Israel war with Iran
4. The US is obviously incapable to defend them against these attacks and is now apparently flat-out refusing to intervene in Yemen (https://t.co/QpQEvCbehq)
5. They are bleeding money at an accelerating rate and, ironically, we may soon see an "inverted petrodollar" situation whereby, instead of recycling oil profits into US Treasuries, they'll be forced to sell them to cover oil losses caused by US wars

All in all, hard to overstate what a complete clusterfuck this represents.

The US is supposedly running "operation economic outcast" on Iran but, very concretely, the Saudis are getting at least as badly "outcasted" as the Iranians in just about every dimension.

And, unlike Iran, Saudi Arabia isn't structurally built to survive this. They bet their country's future on trusting America...
