Last year one school lunch cost 59 cents, this year it’s 85 cents. A steep increase
due to the economic downturn, soaring food prices & 40% inflation. Increasing
domestic food production is a vital priority for us and our partner farming
communities.

At school, we switched from cooking with wood charcoal to cooking with propane, a cleaner and healthier solution that reduces the need to cut trees.

HAITI LEADERS: in 2014 Haiti’s millet production: 44,151 tons; in 2016:
18,589. A nasty bug attacked the crops. Quisqueya University researchers
led by Dr. GAEL PRESSOIR developed a bug-resistant plant they tested in
2017. In 2021 millet production: 70,000 tons. Kudos!

Gangs’ roadblocks prevent farmers from selling their harvests in markets. Our
solution: we buy vegetables directly from the farmers through CAMA the
cooperative we jointly established and they now own. Farmers earn a living, kids
eat very fresh vegetables.

We facilitated linking the P. Lumumba School in Haiti with the Coral Gables HS
Rotary Interact Program to start a pen pal program. It’s a safe place to exchange
ideas about everything teenagers love and to forget, for a moment, Haiti’s harsh
reality.
