Coal Gasification: Indiaโs โBlack Gold 2.0โ Moment ๐ฅ
For decades, India has mainly used coal by simply burning it to generate electricity.
But Coal Gasification changes the game completely.
Instead of directly burning coal, the coal is converted into a cleaner fuel called Syngas (Synthetic Gas) using oxygen, steam, heat & pressure inside a Gasifier.
This Syngas becomes a powerful industrial raw material that can be used to produce:
โข Synthetic fuels
โข Fertilizers like Urea
โข Cleaner & more efficient electricity
โข Chemicals like Methanol & Acetic Acid
In simple words: India is trying to move from: Burning Coal to Using Coal as a Chemical Resource.
India imports massive amounts of:
โข Crude Oil
โข Fertilizers
โข Natural Gas
โข Industrial chemicals
Coal Gasification can reduce these imports significantly by using Indiaโs own coal reserves to manufacture many of these products domestically. This strengthens:
โข Energy Security
โข Aatmanirbhar Bharat
โข Fertilizer Independence
โข Chemical Manufacturing
The biggest opportunities may emerge in:
Fertilizer, Chemicals, Energy Infrastructure, Gas Handling & Engineering & EPC
Key PSU names to track:
โข Coal India Limited
โข GAIL (India) Limited
โข Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited
Note: (Always do your own research before investing; this is for educational purposes.)
Coal Gasification , Air Blown Gasifier mechanism , mapping the process and commercial viability
Remains crucial to study this at this time , considering the global crisis as well as Government recent push on this
Working on something in detail here with Arvind @logical_traderr , publishing soon
Task 33 (Gasification of Biogenic and Waste Feedstocks for a Sustainable Future) has released its latest status report on thermochemical gasification of biomass and waste, providing a comprehensive overview of technologies, markets, and regional trends.
Key insights:
- Europe: Gasification for small-scale CHP is well-established, but scaling up to advanced fuels like SAF and hydrogen faces a critical valley of deathโmany technically proven projects (e.g., Gaya, Bioliqยฎ, ABSL, KEW) stalled due to financial barriers.
- North America: Ambitious projects struggle with cost and policy uncertaintyโEnerkem and Fulcrum closures highlight risks, while new entrants (SunGas, DG Fuels, Mote) are advancing green methanol and carbon-negative hydrogen.
- Asia: China is taking the lead with >80 large-scale plants in operation and >90 renewable methanol projects planned, projected to deliver 60% of global green methanol by 2028. India is also advancing with its 2G ethanol plant in Panipat.
๐ Takeaway for policymakers:
Gasification is a flexible and technically viable pathway for renewable fuels, hydrogen, SAF, and chemicalsโand a key enabler of carbon-negative solutions. But widespread deployment in Europe and North America hinges on bridging the financing gap for first-of-a-kind plants with stable long-term policy support and investment.

Building on its legacy of firsts, NTPC has met and surpassed the governmentโs 5% biomass co-firing mandate for FY25. In May 2024, NTPC successfully co-fired 20% torrefied biomass with coal at the Tanda Plant, marking Indiaโs first such achievement.
Biomass co-firing, the process of blending biomass with coal, helps reduce CO2 emissions and address air pollution caused by stubble burning. This milestone not only showcases NTPCโs technological expertise but also reinforces its commitment to decarbonising thermal power plants and advancing its Net Zero Emission goals.
This achievement stands as a testament to NTPCโs dedication to sustainable progress and energy innovation.
