We just published the 2026 State of the Climate Report. Of 16 planetary vital signs spanning greenhouse gas concentrations, temperatures, the oceans, ice, energy balance, and wildfire, 7 (44%) are currently at record extremes. Read report here: https://t.co/Ppb8TluFCG
El Niño just arrived in June 2026, but one of its effects on ocean ecosystems is already visible: lower chlorophyll.
This green pigment is found in phytoplankton, which form the base of the marine food web.
Incredible warmth continues to build across the equatorial Pacific.
In the central Pacific, this El Niño is already as warm as the 1997 event was in late August and the 2015 event was in early October.
Humans are slowly mapping the microbial genetic seascape of the upper ocean, allowing exploration of e.g. ocean as a single meta-organism, “ocean metabolism,” “conveyor-belt” dynamics, etc. Congrats to the authors and the ACE project team. 🌊🧬https://t.co/OEFqWO6gKG
True color from Nov-10th: it was still too early in spring for such bright waters (coccolithophores) to appear over the Patagonian shelf (SW South Atlantic). October already had shown the highest PIC on record for that month.

Great team of editors, and currently waiving publication costs.
