The mining impact from EVs and clean energy are trivial compared to what humans do every year for fossil fuels.
(Plus EV minerals will be fully recycled vs single-use fossil fuels)

Good morning with good news: "Quarterly global solar installations appear to be growing at 50% per annum over the past three years." Also, China's first half 2023 solar build jumped 154% compared to H1 2022! World may add about 390 GW of solar in 2023.

In the year since the #InflationReductionAct became law, 51 US solar factories have been announced or expanded, $20B of investment, including: 85 GW of solar panel capacity, 43 GW of cells, 20 GW of silicon ingots & wafers, & 7 GW of inverter capacity!

Contrast these views on role of direct air capture:
“The role of carbon removal in addressing climate change is to remove legacy emissions. It’s not to offset continued fossil fuel use,” said Erin Burns, the ED of the climate advocacy group @carbon_180.

Crazy that right now CAISO is 25 GW and ERCOT is 75 GW. Yes, CA has milder weather and TX has more industrial load - but still, that's 3x power demand delta, and CA has 30% more population. @grid_status
🧵Since it is becoming hard to track, here is a thread of the simply astounding weather records planet Earth has started shattering in recent weeks:
1. Dramatic flood events have begun striking various countries around the world simultaneously this week.

If you care about clean energy deployment, climate targets, or IRA implementation, you really need to start paying attention to PUCs. So much is riding on them.
PUCs are the new climate agency. @leahstokes @charleschurros

Good morning with good news: Building new wind & solar, even with storage, is often cheaper than operating existing coal & gas plants in USA! Marginal cost of wind & solar is often below LCOE of coal & gas. Closing coal & gas plants and replacing them with RE often saves money!
The power of slowing things down:
"While a containership of around 8,000 TEU would consume about 225 tons of bunker fuel per day at 24 knots. At 21 knots, this consumption drops to about 150 tons per day, a 33% decline."

The net load in @California_ISO is currently near zero, which is the lowest it has been in the past 30 days.
This means that solar and wind energy are currently meeting almost all of the state's electricity demand.
.@CoreyBCantor w/ update: "Global passenger EV sales grew 60% in 2022 compared to a year earlier, exceeding 10.4 million units. China and Europe still lead the market, although EV sales in Europe have visibly slowed as the region battles inflation and supply-chain bottlenecks"
The US sold 918,000 new EV last year, representing new annual electricity demand of about 3.67 TWh.
Yet the US also created 96 TWh of fresh electricity last year entirely from new wind+solar.
Our clean power growth swamps new EV demand.
More in tomorrow's @TheGregorLetter
Good morning with good news: IRA will unleash $3 Trillion worth of investment in clean energy tech from 2022-2031, says Goldman Sachs. Triggering this investment tsunami are $1.2 trillion of tax credits for EVs, RE, nuclear, batteries, EE, hydrogen & CCS. https://t.co/eZFvy7xXrV
