Alignment absolutely matters during underwater kicking.

But if swimmers can’t create propulsion, they’re not going to go anywhere.

Swimmers have to be able to move water, move it over a reasonable distance, and move it fast.

That’s what they have to do.

With a simple and clear objective, we can find strategies.

I really like using resistance.

The resistance creates more pressure on the feet.

And when they can feel that pressure, they can learn how to optimize it to create more, create more over a longer distance, and create more in less time.

Then, it’s just a matter of practice.

The hips do move in freestyle, and they do play a role, but that role is secondary to what’s happening with the upper body.

Rotation happens for one reason.

It allows swimmers to recover their arms over the surface of the water.

If the shoulder doesn’t come out, the arm isn’t coming out.

But just twisting the spine to get the shoulders out often isn’t enough, either.

So what happens?

The hips rotate as well, but typically less than the shoulders.

The whole point is to get the arms out of the water and swimmers need to rotate the shoulders as well as the hips to make it happen.

It’s a simple anatomical problem and trying to make it more than that often leads to excessive rotation, poor timing, and slow swimming.

Just let the hips happen.
