Petrified trees like this pose a fascinating question.

They pass through multiple rock layers.

They have no roots.

They're broken, transported, and buried upright.

Some are even found crossing from one coal seam into another, despite being species that don't grow in swamp environments.

If these layers accumulated over vast spans of time, the wood should have decayed long before the upper layers were deposited.

Instead, the evidence points to rapid burial.

Exactly what we'd expect in a world reshaped by catastrophic flooding.
