Accommodation is by far, very cheap in Nigeria (allow me to explain).
However, it is one of the biggest cause of stress, depression and even marriage problems in Nigeria.
Why? The major problem is that you must pay minimum of one year rent up front. It is not the cost of the monthly rent that is the issue.
In short, when most people divide their annual rent into 12, they shockingly find out that it is cheap and that they can afford it if they were to pay it monthly.
There are many professionals and business men and women in Nigeria that can afford to rent house in Ikoyi / Banana Island if they are allowed to pay rent monthly like in the Western countries.
Even Nigerians who come back from abroad, who were paying the equivalent of Nigerian's one year rent in a month, find it difficult to pay rent in Nigeria because of the minimum one year demanded from them.
Think about this example. Your monthly combined take home as a professional is โฆ2,000,000. That is โฆ24,000,000 per year. But you still cannot afford to rent a small 2 bedroom flat in Ikoyi for (e.g) โฆ6,000,000. Why? Because you are required to pay that โฆ6,000,000 + other charges upfront, one time. Therefore, you continue to stay in Iyana Ipaja because that's where you think that your salary can afford. You still think that you are poor. No, you are not poor. It is the system like this accommodation one year payment makes you feel that you are poor.
Imagine if you are allowed to pay about โฆ500,000 monthly from that your โฆ2,000,000 salary, think about how it will ease your burden and make you feel rich staying in Ikoyi. You can comfortably live (at least) in Oniru or Lekki Phase 1 with your salary instead of Ikorodu. You can actually afford a Serviced Apartment that eases your No Electricity burden.
This is why life and house rent payment seems cheaper or simpler in Canada, USA or UK etc. It looks cheaper to pay $1500 rent per month from your $2500 salary a month abroad because you are not looking to borrow that $18,000 + fees to pay one year rent upfront. You are just paying monthly as you earn without too much stress.
Nigerians will live and enjoy life and their money better if they can pay rent monthly. But unfortunately, I know that it will be difficult for Landlords because the bad eggs tenants, will owe their Landlords hence the one year requirement. You can't blame the Landlords too much.
@mrmacaroni Everyone is coming out now to speak because of the people involved. In 2023/24, scores of massacre in Benue state, only few come out to condemn the barbaric action. Am not supporting the killings in Uromi, but some people overdo things.
