Oct 2024, I was a final year student at Yaba College of Technology.

Building a food delivery product at the time, Juggling classes, school activities and business was hectic for me.

On a faithful day, my course mate informed me that I am yet to pay a particular faculty due.

After making enquiries as to how I will make this payment, I was told to make transfer to a particular bank account, then go print a screenshot of my bank receipt at a cyber cafe, after which I will take that receipt to the faculty office for stamping and conversion to the faculty official receipt, and then proceed to my course adviser office with the same receipt for confirmation.

On getting to my course advisers office, I saw a pile of paper, those papers were unrelated to this faculty due, but I became curious, Is this how all this papers go to waste? I did the math in my head, let’s say 150 students in my level. 150 students x 100NGN = 15, 000 this is how much students spend on printing those papers.

I asked my faculty president why they aren’t using paystack and other payment providers cos they had a website, he said they reached out to paystack but no response, why reach out to paystack when you can just create an account and start accept payments? They don’t have the KYC documents paystack and others require, then I began digging and researching, for 3 - 4 months I kept on asking questions.

I asked my departmental president as well, asked other faculties and departments, asked the SUG, they all had the similar workaround to the problem,

Some faculties even require students to visit a bank branch on the campus, then use teller to pay, (you must have seen those long queues at bank branches when you visit a college) Yes, this is majorly the problem.

After months of asking around, I took the problem to my then CTO & co-founder who was also a student, He could relate cos he had to go to a bank and queue to pay his faculty due, I convinced him, though he was reluctant he got the idea but was already fixated on automating our food delivery processes.

It took me about 7-14 days with cursor at the time to build an MVP, something I could show my faculty and departmental reps, they got it immediately and began to help me refine the product with useful feedback.

Around November 2024, I submitted an application for Entertainment week Lagos (EWL), a Dealroom event I found on Techcabal, I got accepted and got training from Chikodi of Salad Africa, Kemdi the Coach, among others, great experience, thanks to the EWL organizers, Boss Deola & Dare Art Alade for the opportunity.

After EWL, it became glaring that there is an opportunity here, spoke with friends, I remember I had a friend who worked in fintech, I met him on a day when I went delivering food in school, he greeted and we exchanged contacts, I reached out, he accepted same day to become CTO.

I had no idea what API’s were or what backend looks like until I brought this guy on, he & Possible the CPO basically restructured the system from a Frontend only architecture to a full application with backend, API’s, authentication, and more.

I’ll say picking them was my best decision ever, now i write backend code like Ive been building for many years.
